So I don’t know if you have heard of the “backrooms”, but it’s been fascinating to me the last several days. The idea:
Sometimes, at unexpected times and places, people will no-clip through reality, and land … somewhere else.
That “somewhere else” is a kind of liminal space, usually (but not exclusively) consisting of endless hallways and rooms, assembled nonsensically, covered in yellow wallpaper and lit by fluorescent lights. These rooms go on for miles it seems.
Sometimes, there will appear to be artifacts or other structures, with no obvious way they could have arrived there.
Sometimes, you’ll hear something or someone else moving around, but if you do, be careful, because they sure as hell have heard you.
There’s SO MANY videos on youtube about this; not just about the mythology of the backrooms or whatever, but actual “found-footage” style clips and video of people who find themselves in the backrooms. Like, literally, searching for “backrooms” on youtube will send you down a real rabbit hole.
This all started back in 2019 or so, and blew up on the web. One of the guys (a 17-year old) that did a bunch of the shorts on youtube is now making a backrooms feature film for A24.
All this is to say, the aesthetic keyword so far for my 2025 is “liminal”. liminal music, liminal art, liminal storytelling and videos. Dunno what’s up with that, but the universe has decided for me.
Here’s a link to send you down the rabbit hole too.
